Lynyrd Skynyrd was the authoritative Southern rock confect ring, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a malcontent Southern trope and a strong rock browbeat. Skynyrd ne'er relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll dance orchestra -- they crataegus oxycantha suffer packed endlessly onstage, just their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and land. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd's cracker range tended to wispy the songwriting skills of their lottery card, Ronnie Van Zant. Throughout the band's early records, Van Zant demonstrated a bent for lyrical detail and a earthy silver dollar that had more than in rough-cut with land than rock & wave. During the tallness of Skynyrd's popularity in the mid-'70s, however, Van Zant's talents were overshadowed by the group's coarse-grained, oily blues-rock. Sadly, it wasn't until he was killed in a tragical aeroplane break apart in 1977 on with two former bandmembers that many listeners began to earn his talents. Skynyrd rip up after the sheet crash, but they reunited a 10 by and by, becoming a popular concert move during the early '90s.

Patch in high school in Jacksonville, FL, Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Allen Collins (guitar), and Gary Rossington (guitar) formed My Backyard. Within a few months, the grouping added bassist Leon Wilkeson and keyboardist Billy Powell, and changed their identify to Lynyrd Skynyrd, a derisive testimonial to their gym teacher Leonard Skinner, wHO was infamous for punishing students with farseeing hair. With drummer Bob Burns, Lynyrd Skynyrd began playing throughout the South. For the start few eld, the group had little succeeder, only manufacturer Al Kooper signed the banding to MCA afterward seeing them play at an Atlanta golf club called Funocchio's in 1972. Kooper produced the group's 1973 debut, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, which was recorded after previous Strawberry Alarm Clock guitar player Ed King united the banding. The mathematical group became infamous for their triple-guitar onrush, which was showcased on "Absolve Bird," a tribute to the lately departed Duane Allman. "Release Bird" earned Lynyrd Skynyrd their start interior picture and it became 1 of the staples of album john Rock radiocommunication, still receiving airplay decades after its release.

"Free Bird" and an opening slot on the Who's 1973 Quadrophenia tour of duty gave Lynyrd Skynyrd a devoted next, which helped their second album, 1974's Second Helping, become its breakthrough hit. Featuring the hit single "Sweet Home Alabama" -- a response to Neil Young's "Southerly Man" -- Endorsement Helping reached telephone number 12 and went multi-platinum. At the ending of the class, Artimus Pyle replaced drummer Burns and King left the band shortly after. The new sestet released Nuthin' Fancy in 1975, and it became the band's first base Top Ten strike. The criminal record was followed by the Tom Dowd-produced Gimme Back My Bullets in 1976, which failed to match the achiever of its two predecessors. However, the band retained their next through invariant touring, which was documented on the double alive record album One More from the Road. Released in late 1976, the album featured the band's new guitarist, Steve Gaines, and a trio of female patronage singers, and it became Skynyrd's endorsement Top Ten album.

Lynyrd Skynyrd released their sixth album, Street Survivors, on October 17, 1977. Three days by and by, a privately hired plane carrying the dance orchestra betwixt shows in Greenville, SC, and Baton Rouge, LA, crashed outside of Gillsburg, MS. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and his babe Cassie, one of the group's backing vocalists, died in the crash; the remaining members were injured. (The grounds of the crash was either fuel famine or a flaw with the plane's mechanics.) The cover for Street Survivors had pictured the band encircled in flames; after the crash, the address was changed. In the heat of the tragedy, the album became one of the band's biggest hits. Lynyrd Skynyrd stony-broke up after the crash, cathartic a collection of other demos called Skynyrd's First and...Last in 1978; it had been scheduled for spillage in front the crash. The double-album compilation Gold & Platinum was released in 1980.

After in 1980, Rossington and Collins formed a novel band that featured quaternary living members. Two geezerhood by and by, Pyle formed the Artimus Pyle Band. Collins suffered a car crash in 1986 that killed his girl and left him paralytic; quaternion old age afterwards, he died of respiratory failure. In 1987, Rossington, Powell, King, and Wilkeson reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd, adding vocalizer Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Randall Hall. The band embarked on a reunion circuit, which was captured on the 1988 double live record album Southern by the Grace of God/Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour -- 1987. The re-formed Skynyrd began recording in 1991, and for the end of the tenner, the band toured often, putting out albums erst in a while. The reunited Skynyrd ofttimes switched drummers, only it had slight imprint on their sound.

During the '90s, Lynyrd Skynyrd were made honorary colonels in the Alabama State Militia, imputable to their classical stone staple "Honeyed Home Alabama." During the mid-'90s, Van Zant, Rossington, Wilkeson, and Powell regrouped by adding deuce Southern rock candy veterans to Skynyrd's guitar stable: old Blackfoot frontman Rickey Medlocke and ex-Outlaw Hughie Thomasson. With ex-Damn Yankee Michael Cartellone delivery stability to the metal drum chair, the reconstituted band signed to CMC International for the 1997 album Twenty dollar bill. This batting order went on to vent Lyve from Steeltown in 1998, followed a class by and by by Sharpness of Forever. The seasonal doer crusade Dec 25 Time Again was released in shine 2000. Although Wilkeson died one class later, Lynyrd Skynyrd regrouped and recorded Vicious Cycle for a 2003 press handout. The DVD/CD Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour followed a year by and by, 2006 byword the release of Face to Face, and 2007 brought Paper Sleeve Box and Lyve from Steel Town.
